Gentoo + RaQ 2+ = teh happy

Friday, June 25th, 2004

So I’ve got my RaQ 2+ almost to the point where I can boot it from harddrive. While this may not sound like alot but if you keep in mind that this is my FIRST Gentoo install and a pretty strange one at that, then this is pretty impressive.

Of course the kernel compile is taking seemingly forever. Hopefully tomorrow night I can finish emerging the base packages I’ll need for the router and reboot it into a full blown Gentoo environment to finish up configuring the system.

If all goes well, I’ll have a sexy 1U router that will be my IP-NAT gateway, IPv6 tunnel endpoint and VPN tunnel endpoint.

Not bad for a scrawny 250MHz MIPS processor, eh?

Of course, a notice will be posted when the unit makes the switch over due to the downtime required.

Cobalt RaQ happieness…

Thursday, June 24th, 2004

I got my RaQ 2+ yesterday — the thing is dead sexy. I booted it into RaQ OS once just to take a look at it. It’s a pretty slick little OS, tho outdated for what I wanted so I immediatly wiped the drive and started installing gentoo. They have a testing/semi-stable port specifically for the RaQ/Qube 2/2+ platform. I was able to get the stage3 tarball on the system last night and am in the process of emerging the needed utilities. Tonight I will compile the kernel, install the bootloader and start transferring settings over from the current router.

Once it’s done, I’ll image the harddrive and put it in service as the NAT gateway/firewall/ipsec tunnel endpoint.

I’m bidding on another RaQ 2+ to make into a development / test box and then eventually into another internetwork router.

More info / pics as I get this setup and working.

Planned network wide outage.

IPSec happieness

Friday, June 11th, 2004

I’ve got a test IPSec link up and running at this point between my wireless laptop and my wired network. The next step is to get the IPSec tunnels up between the two remote networks and mine. This should be a snap once the end points have hardware that will do VPN.

More info as things start to shape up.

DNS troubles..

Wednesday, June 9th, 2004

It appears that sometime last night my DNS stopped resolving. I have re-done my zonefile at my DNS provider and it seems to be working OK.

I apologize for the inconvenience.
